Daniel Cervoni, 23, was found guilty in November of sexually assaulting a woman after a night out in New Haven, prosecutors said. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison, but it will be suspended after two and a half years, the state prosecutor's office said. He must serve 15 years of probation after being released.

Evidence presented at trial showed that Cervoni, the victim, and three others had been visiting a mutual friend’s dorm when he had sex with the unconscious woman. Other people in the room witnessed the assault, the prosecutor said.

Neither Cervoni nor the victim were students at the university, authorities said.

Cervoni will be required to register as a sex offender in Connecticut for the rest of his life, the judge ruled. He is also never allowed to contact the victim.
